Approval Criteria Required for Graduate Transfer Credits
1. Graduate credit may only be transferred from other regionally-accredited institutions.
2. Credits transferred from another institution may be used for only one degree.
3. Students must be formally admitted to a graduate program of study.
4. Up to 6 semester hours of transfer credit may be applied toward fulfillment of graduate degree requirements at the University of Utah.
5. The courses must have a letter grade of “B” or higher.
6. “Credit only” grades are not acceptable.
7. Course work must be recommended by the student’s supervisory committee, and taken within 4 years of semester of admission to the University of Utah for master’s students and within 7 years of semester of admission to the University of Utah for doctoral students.
How to Transfer Graduate Courses to the U
Graduate Transfer Credit Authorization Form
Grad Courses Taken as an Undergrad
Students may be allowed to select certain graduate-level courses (6000 level or above) taken while enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Utah to apply for graduate credit toward the Robotics PhD, MS or graduate certificate. Such graduate credit is limited to 6 semester hours or 2 courses. Credit used to earn the undergraduate degree may not be double counted toward a graduate degree. ONLY coursework beyond 120 credits and major requirements for the undergraduate degree should be considered. The Undergraduate Petition for Graduate Credit form is available in the Registrar’s Office, and requires approval from the Dean of The Graduate School.
University BS/MS students have different forms and requirements. BS/MS is not available to Robotics MS students.
If a student seeks retroactive graduate credit for courses taken as an undergraduate (1) grade of B or better is required, and (2) the course must be taken no more than 3 years prior to the petition.
Graduate courses taken as an undergraduate that do not receive credit may be used to waive degree or certificate requirements or prerequisites, but would not reduce the number of credits required. Likely a substitute course would be required. Waivers and transfer credit will be considered by the Director of Robotics Studies. See the Graduate Coordinator for details.
Non-Matriculated Coursework
A student may only count (up to) 9 credit hours of non-matriculated graduate work toward any graduate degree if they are later admitted as a degree-seeking student. The coursework must be completed within 3 years for graduate coursework and with a minimum grade of B or higher. Students need to formally apply for degree-seeking status and have their coursework evaluated by the program director and/or the Graduate School.
Evaluation of Prior Coursework
Students with PRIOR graduate work in math, science, or engineering from OUTSIDE the University of Utah may count to up to 21 credit hours of previously completed course work towards the 30 required credits for the PhD. Transfer courses are not allowed/ encouraged during enrollment in the Robotics Program.
For credit from outside the University, current students must submit a copy of unofficial transcripts and the course syllabus for each course in Grad Tracker. These course credit hours must be approved by the student’s research advisor and the Robotics Graduate Director, and are subject to the Supervisory Committee approval. Evaluation criteria will follow University Graduate School Transfer requirements:
* Core or Elective courses must meet 80% of more of a University of Utah course
* Credits may only be counted if the student was enrolled in an MS or PhD program at an accredited University
* Courses must meet the US equivalent of B grade of higher
* “Credit only” grades are not acceptable
* Course work must be approved by the student’s supervisory committee on the final Program of Study
* Course work must be taken within four years of semester of admission to the University of Utah for masters’ students and within seven years of semester of admission to the University of Utah for doctoral students
Graduate work (6000 level or above) from the University of Utah is eligible to transfer into the Robotics MS and PhD programs as it aligns with the program requirements. A Milestone Master’s from the U may be applied toward the PhD coursework as well, subject to Supervisory Committee approval.
